Un abril más húmedo de lo normal en Ciego de Ávila

After several months with rainfall below the norm, aggravating the risks of drought, the end of April brought us the surprise of an excess of humidity above normal for the province of Ciego de Ávila at this end of the dry period.

The fourth month of the year ended in the geography of Ciego de Ávila with a sheet of 84 millimeters (mm), which represents 156.7 percent of its historical average, according to the statistics of the network of rain gauges of the Provincial Meteorological Center and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources.

Regarding the spatial distribution of rainfall, the highest records were concentrated in the extreme west of the province and to a lesser extent towards the southern part.

The closing of April and the first day of May, the cloud bands associated with the passage of the cold front, brought accumulations such as those of the town of Limones Palmero, municipality of Majagua, with 83 mm; they were seconded by Jagüeyal with 65 mm and Júcaro with 45 mm, both in Venezuela, the meteorologist Frank Fernández Castañeda informed.

With these rains, although very positive, it is still not possible to say with certainty that we are out of the danger of drought, especially when at the end of the first four-month period of the year 138.9 mm were registered in the province, equivalent to 83.2 percent of the historical average of the mentioned period.

These figures are not entirely significant enough to be able to speak of a recovery of the surface and underground basins. The volumes of the seven dams indicate this, since they store just 38,764 cubic hectometers, which is equal to 26 percent of their total volume.

Waiting to know the runoff and seepage into the aquifers, we will know in what conditions the territory begins the wet period, from May to October.
