Ciego de Ávila: El cuchillo del herrero y la yuca

Sometimes, the yuccas do not soften and it seems that neither does the heart of those who market them in the state agricultural markets (MAE by its Spanish initials) at the maximum price (4.00 pesos a pound), in full harvest of that food and in an eminently agricultural province.

There can be no justification for the fact that the maximum price of this food in Cienfuegos, a territory whose economy is sustained by industrial development, is below the ones set in Ciego de Ávila's properties, where the productivity of the land represents one of the greatest wealth. "The shoemaker's son always goes barefoot", as the popular proverb states.

The marked tendency to take advantage of the maximum costs is added to this, many times neglecting (is this the appropriate term?) the conditions of the products, when selling them as top quality when the image does not suggest it and, in many cases, with conditions for its decommissioning.

Behind such attitudes and under murals that enact the rights of consumers, flagrant violations of the quality-price correlation occur, which could perfectly be classified as crimes of Breach of Protection Standards to the consumer by taking into account their repeated condition. Moreover, we cannot reject the fact that behind these behaviours, facts of Illicit Enrichment are hidden, based on possible price adulterations.

The rigorous confrontation with these facts in the context of the Ordering Task acquires special relevance, in which we are not spectators, but active participants; therefore, we cannot limit ourselves to evaluate the correspondence among income, expenses and benefits.

As citizens and, under the protection of current legislation, we have the right and the obligation to denounce what some of us summarize in the word robbery, by affecting citizens' economic situation as a result of imbalances and the lack of commitment to efforts developed in the country to survive a deep global crisis, exacerbated by the effects of the pandemic Covid-19 and the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US government on the Island.

It is not the time to ignore the issues that concern all of us, or it is wrong to wait for the police officer or the state inspector to act, who, obviously, cannot remain everywhere or proceed without popular support and the integration of political organizations and population.

In a nation that is forged on the Martian maxim of "with everyone and for the good of everyone", there are all mechanisms for popular confrontation and timely denunciation, because the vox populi is and will continue to be the essential measure of the effectiveness of the processes inherent to the updating of the Cuban economic model. This is evidenced by the flexibility, the readjustments and the attention to the concerns of the population in the middle of the implementation of the Ordering Task.

As part of the popular accompaniment to this process, the need to increase levels of efficiency and productivity, generate greater offers that enable a reduction in prices and promote competitiveness in the national and international market, has also been defined.

In this commitment, it is imperative to continue promoting local development programs to achieve self-sufficiency and to banish inertia in the strengthening of the socialist state enterprise, with the essential integration of science, technology and innovation, as it is indicated by the Cuban President, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

The president himself has recently expressed, in his article Science and innovation as a cornerstone of government management: a path towards local food systems, "that is focused on sustainable development, the satisfaction of food and nutritional needs of the population and attention to the accessibility, quality and safety of food ”.

Therefore, it is imperative to do something and do it immediately. This is the only way we will ensure that the MAE's yuccas, where we usually buy, or those of self-employed workers (often promoters of abusive and speculative prices) do not constitute the only option, since there is the possibility of acquiring others for the same or lower price, even, with better quality.
