Rehabilitado primer segmento de playa en cayo Paredón Grande

Works in the West sector of Playa Norte, in Paredón Grande Cay

Playa Norte, on the Paredón Grande Cay, has received more than 43,000 cubic meters of sand to date, with total restoration of the morphological parameters in the first 235 linear meters of that site, where specialized forces and Cuban scientists carry out one of the actions most important in the country in favor of the Life Task.

The Hydrographer engineer, Master of Science in Coastal Management Technologies, Miguel Izquierdo Álvarez, project manager, told Granma that, after a deep study, this region was chosen because it was one of the most affected areas in the country with a setback of the coastline of about 24 meters, caused by the hit of Hurricane Irma, in September 2017.

For the first time in that region of the Sabana-Camagüey archipelago, the dumping is done with a modern suction dredger in operation, belonging to the Maritime Works Company of the Ministry of Construction, a team that will rehabilitate some 2,190 meters of beaches, with a density of 183 cubic meters of sand per linear meter, in correspondence with the executive project, led by the Inversiones Gamma SA, of Citma.

In addition to the dredge, the work, which will last about three months, involves a tugboat, a lugger, a crane and other naval equipment; also a bulldozer and a backhoe in the coastal area, in charge of the distribution of the sand, the profiling of the beach and the conformation of the dunes, about 30 meters wide and four meters high with respect to the average sea level, the specialist reported.

Rafael Pérez Carmenate, territorial delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma), in Ciego de Ávila, affirmed that four beaches of the Jardines del Rey destination were benefited in 2016 and 2018 with the dumping of sand, an action of proven effectiveness while they were the ones that deteriorated the least with the passage of Hurricane Irma, in addition, it is the best option to counteract the deficit of natural sand income, control erosive processes, restore the protective function and aesthetic values of the coastal area, as part of the actions provided for in the State Plan for Confronting Climate Change, known as Life Task.

Izquierdo Álvarez announced that, after the rehabilitation of Playa Norte, the works will continue in other ones, in accordance with the National Program for the Recovery of Beaches that is being implemented in the country.

Paredón Grande is a cay located in the north of the province of Camagüey and Cayo Romano with an area of about 8.7 square kilometers, it has the capacity for a hotel plant with 3,200 rooms, of which more than half are in different construction phases.
